Paola was first introduced as a student in Drew's Chemistry class who started "hitting" on him. It made Drew highly uncomfortable. She is Jewish, her family attends the same temple as his family. Her mother Karen has been trying to get Paola to get "in" with the "in" crowd. One way to do that is to cause Drew grief (since he has caused them grief). Karen encouraged Paola to "hit on" Drew and cause Breaia to break up with him. She starts that process. At the school dance, Paola bemoans being "alone" and not having anyone to dance with. She gets a dance with Drew. However, Breaia and Drew are so friendly, she realizes her mother's "plan" is not just stupid, but mean. She "flips" and becomes friends with Drew's friend group, annoying her mother. Paola's parents are currently getting a divorce. Her mild mannered father is "done" with Karen's manipulative ways, and abusive verbal attacks. He is a very good lawyer, a partner in his own law firm. He is working to get custody of Paola and her twin brothers (3 years younger). After the dance, Lily and Barry break up. A social situation occurs where Barry needs "a date", he asks Paola to go with him, just as a friend. She is now embedded in Drew's inner circle.
