Dr. Fausto de Oliveira is a very traditional Brazilian male. His position in life is driven by family, connections, position, and money. His children (only one) should be used to further the family position in life. He has moved his small family to the United States because the opportunities he had to further grow the prestige of his overall family were very limited with just a single daughter. Most of the young men of their acquaintance he might have considered for her hand were not what he would choose. He is hoping she will take advantage of the opportunities in the United States and being bilingual to make a better life and social connection. He is somewhat of an education snob, being a professor of languages at University. His English is fairly good for having never lived in an English speaking country before.
